Do you know who your audience is? First things first. Your

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: large;">JOAN'S BLOG features Susan Branch-Smith from Williamsburg, VA. Susan is owner of
Basecamp Productions, a digital media company with clients nationwide and based in Williamsburg. Her web work since 1996
includes writing, user-focused design, and search engine optimization. This is a summary of what she presented at the CYBER workshop presented by the Alliance in February, 2016. You can contact her at susan@basecamppro.com.

<span style="color: #535353; font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;"> <span style="color: #535353; font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;">Lately you hear the phrase "content is king." Like
it’s something new. Content has always been king.

<span style="color: #535353; font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;">Content, of course, is anything that contributes real value to
your web site: words, illustrations, photographs, videos, and, increasingly,
design. A web site needs to look good and BE good.

<span style="color: #535353; font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;">

<span style="color: #535353; font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;">Content was king when the cave dwellers told the first fireside
story. And good content sells film, books, magazines, and other media.

<span style="color: #535353; font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;">

<span style="color: #535353; font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;">In fact, the term "content is king" actually goes back
to 1974. The phrase was used in a book called Magazine Editing and
Production by J.W. Click and Russell N. Baird. (I actually own this
book.) The phrase has also been attributed to the title of a 1996 Bill Gates
essay (<span style="font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;">http://www.craigbailey.net/content-is-king-by-bill-gates/)<span style="color: #535353; font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;">.<span style="color: #535353; font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;">

<span style="color: #535353; font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;">“Content is king” these days talks specifically about web sites.
It’s just taken a while to become household buzz. <span style="color: #535353; font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;">To those of you in the arts community, good content is clearly about your
topic: what you blog, what you write on your individual pages, and the images
you select.

<span style="color: #535353; font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;">Some often overlooked areas that are quite valuable to Google’s
perception of your content include:

<span style="color: #535353; font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;">External
links.<span style="color: #535353; font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;"> When you refer to the even in passing, link to Alvin Ailey’s web
page (http://www.alvinailey.org). Part of your job in the arts is to help
educate, and Google will look kindly on your efforts.

·<span style="font-size-adjust: none; font-stretch: normal; font: 7pt/normal "Times New Roman";">
<span style="color: #535353; font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;">Internal
links.<span style="color: #535353; font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;"> As you write more content, be sure to link to it when writing
new content. For instance, if you’re writing about this year’s art show and how
it’s different from last year’s, be sure to link to last year’s write-up.
Again, Google perceives that you’re educating your audience.

<span style="color: #535353; font-family: "Arial",sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;">Most of all, be sure to keep writing. You don’t have to call
your blog a blog per se. Call it “arts notes” or “dance diary” or anything that
you think will resonate with your audience.

Todays changing cultural environment presents challenges and important opportunities for the arts to contribute to the livelihood of local communities. We value the traditional audiences but we need to be looking beyond them to embrace their needs, interests, and spending habits. Shannon Bowman discussed the WHRO THE SCENE in Hampton Roads--truly a cyber community in the Hampton Roads area. Tom Powell, founder and Creative Director of the Addison Group, Suffolk, covered basic points to increase our audiences and how to establish and support our company's brand. Susan Branch Smith, Basecamp Productions, Williamsburg, discussed the development of the web-page--for without an effective webpage, our cyber community will not grow!

I encourage you to check out their upcoming blogs. They will give you some of the pointers that they gave us at that workshop.

Joan's Blog.....

How Diversity can help an arts organization grow!

I just came back from speaking at a music
education workshop and of course, it was slighty intimidating, since I was the
only one in the room that did not have any degrees in music? As one person said to me, it’s a great thing
they did not ask you to sing! I was, however,
talking about fund raising and grant making— a topic relevant to any group—not matter
what the artistic ability of the group is.
There were many themes that came out of the conference but the greater
theme was the constant repetition of speakers of the need to embrace all of the
newer types of music (specifically rap and hip hop). This group felt that in order to grow and
continue to be around for many more years they would need to be open minded,
work more closely with youth and youth organizations and openly accept all
types of people in this organization and all types of music.

Diversity, Diversity, Diversity! Only when groups realize that a change is
needed; that they must embrace what is
new in their fields; that they must pay
attention to what their audiences are looking for; that they might need to look at programming in
new ways to accommodate different groups, ethnicities, ages (the millennials) and interests—will they grow and continue to progress and sustain themselves.

The arts are constantly challenged! We must be constantly aware of what is going on
in our field – which is one real value of the Americans for the Arts who
constantly bring into our light what is going on nationally and internationally
in the arts. If you are not a member,
you should join immediately.

The theme
this year for the Cultural Alliance of Greater Hampton Roads is “Diversity”—plan now to join the
Alliance and participate in the several programs, workshops and leadership
forums that will assist the arts community with dealing with a variety
of diversity issues.

Joan's Blog. . . .

Building the literary skills of our children

When asked what they read, many college
graduates indicate that they don’t read anything outside of classwork? Or they may occasionally glance at the news on the
Internet; certainly no time to read a novel.
Yet, in our country we want our children to be able to compete on an international
playing field— and many are without the basic literary
reading and writing skills needed to compete.

We, in the
arts, believe that students should read specific plays, poems, and stories that
have been read down through the ages and that present a historical account
of how our country has evolved. This is good!
What is also good is that children read—I mean read whatever we can get
them to read.

I’ve read about many
stars that say reading and acting in a play opened up a new world for them
and/or provided an escape from a not so happy home life. I’ve also ran into children that love poetry—poetry
that they write, that they recite, that they add the hip hop beat to. This is a
challenge because they have to write it, read it and carry the beat as
they read!

What inspires children who write journals,
poems, even plays. We can assume that
their lives are often told through this media.
We can also assume that as they pass by neighborhoods, visit art
galleries and museums they get ideas; as they drive around or even travel, they
see new worlds and writing can help them hold on to those new worlds and keep the
dream of one day being in that new world alive.

Join the Cultural Alliance of Greater Hampton Roads as we offer young
people a chance to visit the newly renovated Chrysler Museum and create poetry
as they view the exhibits in the Museum.
As the book, The Cat in the Hat says, "oh the places we will go"! Oh the countries they will learn about as
they visit and tour the galleries at the Chrysler Museum. Bring your child to the Museum on Saturday,
June 7 during the hours of 10:15a.m. to 12:30 p.m. (free admission) to participate in
the Poetry Explosion sponsored by the Cultural Alliance of Greater Hampton
Roads. We would love to help spark that
creative writing gene in your child.

Joan's Blog....

Arts Districts -- How they can improve our neighborhoods and grow our cities!

Over the years many downtown areas have been in a state of
demise! They have turned into boarded
buildings and unsafe neighborhoods. City
planners and elected officials have had to struggle to bring these areas back
to life again! One major vehicle that
has worked in many cities is the formation of “arts districts”.

Cities in the Commonwealth of Virginia, such as Richmond, Williamsburg,
Norfolk, Isle of Wright (Smithfield) have been successful at accomplishing this
mission. Some are still in the formation
stage (Norfolk and Isle of Wright) but Richmond and Williamsburg are “models”
of how a thriving arts district can enliven a city and offer many arts and
cultural opportunities for its residents, their families and friends.

The Cultural Alliance has recognized these developments and
the workshop on Arts Districts, presented in March, 2014 in Williamsburg,
offered its participants a great wealth of knowledge and ideas on how to
establish these districts in their areas.

The speakers at this workshop-- Michele DeWitt, Williamsburg; Careyann Weinberg, Norfolk;
and Nicholas Feucht, Richmond;--can be contacted and consulted if you are
interested in learning how they were able to create and maintain their arts
district and to discuss the many, many benefits of such districts (tax
revenues, income and employment opportunities for businesses and artists,
establishment of new businesses, and the list continues).

A conference for artists – The Business of Art.

Yes, you have the talent to draw, sing,
dance, act and to create. But what will
you do with your creative talents? How
will you get the world to see you and support your talents. How will you get paid for your work? Who will come to your performance or your
show.

Yes, we can all have talents but
to actually make a career in the arts, you have to have a business acumen. You have to do bookings, book shows,
concerts, get parts in plays; then you have to sign and create contracts and
receive an income equitable to your level of talent.

Art is a business—and if you are to be
successful in your chosen field, you have to learn The Business of Art. This conference that was sponsored by the
Cultural Alliance of Greater Hampton Roads featured professionals in the arts
field and emerging artists. The
networking, the information and the give
and take from all parties was tremendous.

The conference was an eye opening experience for many who have a lot of talent, but were
fully unaware of the knowledge and information needed to be forge a career in
the arts.

Hampton Roads has a lot of talent and many of the 16
speakers shared their stories and the “paths
they had followed to arrive at where they are today! BRAVO to them—their journeys and advice to
the upcoming artists was very helpful to them.
The conference evaluations told the story—Bravo! Bravo! Bravo! As one
attendee stated. This was the best ever!

CAGHR will hold webinars on some of the topics covered at the conference. Visit the Cultural Alliance's webpage for information about the webinars.

Executive Director Honored!

Saturday, January 18, 2014, I was honored by the Coalition
of 100 Black Women, Tidewater VA chapter, for my years of work in the
arts!

As a former gallery owner,
curator of several arts shows, working as Executive Director of the Cultural Alliance,
and most of all working to assure that my friends, acquaintences, and others
enjoy the arts as much as I love them.
My willingness to get groups together, collect the money, distribute the tickets, and etc.
inspires many people to attend arts programs that they otherwise would
probably not attend. At the end of the
evening when they have had a great artistic experience, I am happy to have been
a part of their excitement.

My words to
the audience was to take these three challenges: One –
attend one arts event at least once a month; Two—take a child with you to an
arts event—or help support a youth group to attend an arts event; and Three—write
a check to a local arts group. With over
300 arts organizations in the Hampton Roads area, a person could be out each
night during the week—there is no dearth of artistic events to attend here! Think on this – education and exposure help
everyone to enjoy the arts!

Arts Advocacy for Arts and Cultural organizations and Artists!

Arts advocacy! In
this day of political upsets and unusual political processes, it is important
that all of us take a part in this important political process. The arts are being threatened from the nation’s capital down to each state in the
union. In Virginia, the General Assembly
will be gathering soon and the Delegates
and Representatives will be working on the state budgets. It is important that we become familiar with the
elected officials that support the arts and, get to know those who don’t support
the arts so that we can provide them with information that may change their
mind. The Virginians for the Arts is a
vehicle through which many arts and cultural organizations work—they are
lobbyists for all of us who work in the arts.
They, however, cannot do it all.
We have to get in there and meet our elected officials, remind the ones who supports the arts about
the impact of the arts. Most politicians
like to learn about the economic impact of the arts (budgets, budgets,
budgets). When the budget proposals
reach their desk, they need to be informed about this economic impact of the
arts – therefore, it is imperative that we tell our story and provide them with
data to help them vote for the arts budget.
First tell them about all the arts organization in their official
districts. Many are not aware of all of
the groups as new ones appear and sadly, some disappear, and others may
merge! Then tell them how the
organizations as a group support their districts, not only with the cultural
experience, but through job creation, tourism, the economics of what happens
when a person attends a cultural event (parking, restaurants, hotels). Many businesses are impacted through the arts
and we must be sure that our elected officials know about the widespread impact
of the arts. The state funds are
provided through the Virginia Commission for the Arts—a very important
organization with representatives throughout the state. Visit your elected official today. Take a representative from a local cultural
group with you, take an actor, musician, poet, anyone in the arts who can tell
the story of how the arts benefits them.

We want to be sure that when our elected officials go to
Richmond, that they are ready to vote to keep the arts funded in the
Commonwealth, through the Virginia Commission for the Arts.

A Tribute to a Great Lady!

The Virginia Symphony and Young Audiences of Virginia paid
tribute to B. Minette Cooper on Saturday, November 2, for her over 50 years of working with both
organizations and her dedication to the arts in Hampton Roads. The Cultural Alliance of Greater Hampton Roads is one of the organizations she supports (she is a charter member of the Alliance). A list of her accomplishments and her devotion
to the arts is too long to write here but we can focus on her strong desire to
make sure that children have an opportunity to experience the arts firsthand! While she worked with the Norfolk public
schools over the years to assure that those students had an opportunity to work
and learn their music and instrument alongside a Symphony musician, her dream
of having those same students dress up and attend a “real” opera in Chrysler
Hall became a reality because she was willing to “put her money where her mouth
is” to make this happen. This real life symphony experience was, as we all can
imagine, a life changer for many of the children in the Norfolk public schools.
One of the letters read from a student
expressed the fact that he lived across the street from Chrysler Hall and had
never attended any event in that venue.
His letter expressed his surprise and amazement at being there and his
total enjoyment of seeing and hearing the Symphony! How many other kids have been touched by such
an experience! The arts open many doors
for our youth along with opening their eyes to the possibilities of life and
what they can do with their lives! We need more Minette Coopers who insist that
we reach out to the next generation and expose them and make a way for them to
experience the arts. Her motto is “just
ask a person to do something-most won’t say no!” Let us all work to ask more arts and culture
organizations and individual artists to work to find ways to help this emerging
generation become involved in the arts and let’s ask businesses and organizations
to support these efforts with their time and money.

Emergency Response Resources

Recently, after a tornado, Bob Lynch, President and CEO of
Americans for the Arts wrote a statement on emergency response for arts and
cultural organizations. Now that summer
is over and we are looking at the hurricane and winter season, this topic is
one arts and cultural organizations and artists should learn more about.

Quoting Bob Lynch’so
exact words, “he said that ‘The Essential Guidelines for Arts Responders’
is an immediate resource to help (organizations) determine their
response and work in the weeks ahead. It
is an abridged version of a longer and more detailed handbook (now in development)
that designed to help local and state arts agencies, organizations, foundations,
and other arts groups plan and administer a coordinated disaster mobilization
system within their service area.”

He also referred agencies to the National Coalition Partners
: CERF+
and ArtsReady for resource links and more
disaster relief information.

In addition, the
Americans For the Arts website has additional information and links for
emergency preparedness and disaster relief: http://www.artsusa.org/networks/laa/017.asp

I encourage arts organizations to take a minute to review
these links and websites and resources so that you can be prepared when
disaster strikes.

The Arts Season has begun . . . .

When September comes, people think about the fall and the
start of school. Those of us in the
arts get excited because it is the start of the arts season. It’s the time to prepare for going to the
theater, opera, dance, art gallery openings, and many, many artistic
performances. Yes we all attend arts
programs during the summer—but they are leisurely designed programs—in outside
venues and they feature samples and examples
of the various offerings by the arts and culture groups in our area—it is hoped that these summer programs entice
audiences to subscribe to the numerous arts and cultural programs available
during the “arts season”.

I really love this
Hampton roads area because if you desire, you could actually be out every night
during the week attending an arts program, either at an established venue or a
local restaurant, or any venue that features art and artists. All of our cities, including the Eastern
Shore have so much to offer! Be sure to
read the arts guides in the Pilot, VEER magazine, Tidewater Women, and other magazines. People ask me “how do you know so much about
upcoming arts programs? Well, of course
when you work in the arts, you are pretty knowledgeable about what is available
in your cities. But, I encourage those
that ask that question to read the “Arts section – the PULSE- which appears
every Thursday in the Pilot! I then send
them to the other magazines, those mentioned above and others, such as Hampton Roads
magazine, the Hampton Roads Gazetti, and also refer them to central websites
that cover various venues in each of the cities. AND, since I work at the Cultural Alliance, I
always refer them to our website that lists the arts activities being offered
all around the region! There is a ton of
information about the arts available to
anyone who really wants to find it!

Use your Cultural Alliance Member benefits today!

Previous blogs have talked about the benefits members receive from the Cultural Alliance. Arts and cultural organizations, as well as individual artists, can reap the rewards of the membership benefits when they join the Cultural Alliance.

Programs and workshops, which offer discount fees to members, are geared to their needs. This year, the programs include a Help Desk with Virginia Tourism during which arts organizations can have a private meeting with the representatives from the Virginia Tourism office to discuss how to grow and market their organization or business in Virginia; a SCORE workshop with the business representatives of SCORE (Society of Retired Executives) to assist with the business side of the organization (finance, marketing, technology, etc.) and an arts conference for individual artists focusing on the Business of Being an Artist!

As an advocacy group, the Alliance is working to help our state's elected officials see the value of the arts; but we also find that much work is needed by local arts and cultural organizations and individual artists in this effort. Therefore, the Alliance is sponsoring an Advocacy workshop in September to help arts groups develop strategies and procedures for meeting with and talking with the elected officials and presenting them their "stories" and how they impact on the arts in our state.

Additional benefits such as our website--on which members can add their activities, job openings, and any information that they want the public to know; use of the bulk mail permit when doing large mailings to their patrons and subscribers and the awards program that pays recognition to those in the arts.

Join the Alliance today by visiting our website and start using the membership benefits today! Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7050066012481341091.post-18541463280632261852013-08-10T21:10:00.000-07:002013-08-10T21:10:17.812-07:00
The Virginia legislators will soon be headed back to
Richmond. Those of us in the arts and culture arena
will be focused on keeping an eye on funding for the arts and cultural organizations. We are
already aware of the possibility of cuts to the National Endowment for the Arts
(which I hope each of you have written to your state representative about). In today’s society, we must remember that
while we love music, art, dance, theater, all kinds of arts programming; when the
state officials get to Richmond, they will be looking at the dollars that the
arts bring into the cities. And, of course, any
information that we can present to our elected officials must be documented.

The recent article in the Virginian Pilot about
the $1.5 million dollar impact of OpSail 2012 provided such data. Karen Scherberger, the CEO of Norfolk FestEvents,
and her team should be commended for a job well done! Their team partnered with many groups in the
Hampton Roads area (and the state) to present the programs and activities during
OpSail. According to the data collected,
there were 58 ships, 6,000 officers, crew, and cadets from 15 nations. There were over 1.5 million visitors who
attended OpSail and 23% of these visitors were from out of town. What was the final figure? Karen
says the City netted 30 million dollars more than the projected figure of 120 million
dollars. What an economic impact to our
area! The impact was also felt in the
local community--individual artists were hired to perform, venues were used for
programs, volunteers and local groups assisted with the visitors on the ships
and with the programs of FestEvents!
OpSail was a buzz of activity for the time that it was in our area! This data impresses our elected
officials.

Be sure to collect the economic and financial data about your organization so that you
will know your organization’s impact in the arts; but remember, elected
officials are very interested in the cities and municipalities that they
represent—so partner with your area organizations and combine the data. Remember, there is strength in numbers! Join the Cultural Alliance of Greater Hampton
Road’s ADVOCACY workshop on September 12th at the Harrison Opera House. The workshop is presented by Pat Rublein of
the Virginians for the Arts; this interactive workshop will train those of us
in the arts how to represent the arts and cultural organizations and provide the elected officials with data they need. . Virginians For the Arts is a partner of Cultural Alliance of Greater Hampton Roads
and they do a great job of advocacy for the arts but they need our help! Log on
the Cultural Alliance’s website today and register for the Advocacy Workshop.

In earlier blogs, I talked about the benefits of
the arts to children. Hampton Roads
offers a variety of art and arts educational experiences for children of all

places as the D’Art Center in Norfolk, MOCA in Virginia Beach, the Suffolk

Additionally there are museums that offer daily art activities and
special children projects that parents can drop in with their children and
create a “make and take” project.

music camps and many individual artists hold summer classes at their studios. Be sure to read the Thursday section of the

Arts Advocacy -- Let's get going!

We are in a political climate that needs to get back to the grassroots. Virginia just had a primary election and only a very small percent of the population event voted in the election. The Washington Post had a wonderful article on why no women are running for office in Virginia! We need to get more involved in the local elections because our local officials in Virginia go to Richmond to determine the budget for our state, what the primary issues are for our state, and which programs will be priority in the state.
Thus, we see the importance of participating in the voting process. Those of us in the arts, keep watch over the State's budget because we know that the elected officials who support the arts are often fighting with the officials who deem that there are more important issues and needs than the arts and culture issues. Of course we have the Virginians For the Arts with Jim Thompson, the President, and his staff working on the arts issues. But they cannot do it alone--they need our help. The Cultural Alliance, in conjunction with the Virginians For the Arts, is planning an advocacy workshop in September. We recognize that not everyone is comfortable calling and visiting elected officials; but with some training and partnering with other groups, we can all develop the skills we need to visit,www.culturalli.org talk with, write and call on our elected officials. We need to advise them of the economic impact of the arts (of course we know the intrinsic value of the arts) but when the officials are looking at budgets and programs, they have to also look at the costs of these program and budgets! Plan now to attend this advocacy workshop with your peers and fellow arts co-workers. Let's get the skills and information we need so that we can become more involved in the political advocacy process to keep the arts alive in the state of Virginia and in Hampton Roads. Visit the Cultural Alliance website to get the date and information about the upcoming September advocacy workshop, www.culturalli.org so that you can attend.
What Life Lessons do the Arts Teach?

The membership
breakfast was a huge success on May 29.
I would like to keep the theme of the benefit of an arts education going
for a couple of additional blogs. The
speaker at that breakfast, r. Barbara Laws,
distributed a handout prepared by the National Art Education Association
entitled “The Visual Arts”. While it was
labeled visual arts, the information was about all types of the arts. It contained a section on “Ten Lessons the
ARTS Teach! Let’s look at five of these
lessons!

“ The arts teach children to make good judgments about
qualitative relationships, unlike much of the curriculum in which correct
answers and rules prevail, in the arts, it is judgment rather than rules that
prevail.

2. The arts teach children that problem can have more than
one solution and that questions can have more than one answer.

3. The arts celebrate multiple perspectives. ……..there are many ways to see the world.

4. The arts teach children that in complex forms of problem
solving purposes are seldom fixed, but change with circumstance and
opportunity. Learning in the arts
requires the ability and a willingness to surrender to the unanticipated
possibilities of the work as it unfolds.

5. The arts make vivid the fat that neither word in their
literal form nor numbers exhaust what we can now. The limits of our language do not define the
limits of our cognition.

Those of us in the arts community can use these points to
advocate for the arts and encourage schools and the local community to support
the arts, support the schools and our children who show a care, a love and
passion for the arts. Read my next blog
to learn additional lessons that the ARTS teach!
The "Arts Matters 2" Campaign by the Cultural Alliance

Do the arts really matters to you?

If you had to answer this question? What comments would you make? I encourage you to watch the YouTube Video that features representatives from many of the local arts and cultural organizations in Hampton Roads (see the link below) telling us why Arts Matter!

The Cultural Alliance needs your support and voice so that we can keep the arts up front and close to everyone, including our elected officials. If the arts matter to you, we encourage you to let your local elected officials know this by attending events and programs that they will be attending during this summer as a part of their campaigns, or by writing them a letter and visiting their offices.

If the arts matter, we also encourage you to join the Cultural Alliance to allow the Alliance to continue its mission of advocacy. Your membership allows the Alliance to continue to offer programs and workshops that help arts organizations thrive and sustain themselves. To join the Alliance and to learn about our programs and upcoming events, visit our website, www.culturalli.org

I also encourage you to plan to attend the Advocacy Workshop training that the Cultural Alliance and Virginians for the Arts will sponsor in September so that we can all become educated on how to effectively spread the message to our elected officials and to the public on why Arts Matter 2!

In the February 24, 2013 issue of the Washington Post magazine,
the cover read “Can the Art Save Students?” If you missed it, and you are in arts education you must read it online or order a
copy. The focus article, written by Anne Midgette, discuss the
arts programs in the elementary school in Anacostia, one of the eight schools
in the country earmarked by the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities
as a “turnaround” school. With three
years of extra funding and the school being adopted by a well-known artist,
Kerry Washington, it is believed that the power of the arts can motivate and
engage the students, teach them skills in teamwork, innovative thinking, and
generally raise their level of education
and test scores in these schools. In this article, the school and students
are awaiting the arrival of Yo-Yo Ma for an arts workshop (some of them will
get to play with him!)

The Cultural Alliance is presenting Dr. Barbara Laws, the
Art Coordinator for the Norfolk Public Schools as a speaker for the Alliance
Membership Breakfast on May 29, 2013. She
believes that the arts can save our students and will discuss some of the
changes being made statewide and locally
to enhance the art programs in our schools.
Hampton Roads has numerous programs that offer arts and cultural
opportunities to children of all ages and in a future blog, I will talk about
the numerous summer arts camps that are available for parents to send their
kids. You can see information about
these camps on our website, www.culturalli.org.

THE ARTS AND THE MILITARY

Today’s celebration of Memorial Day reminds me of the years
when the entertainers used to go to the war zone and entertain the troops. I remember Bob Hope, who for many years was
the man on the frontline who took many singers and dancers with him to
entertain the troops and give then a “taste of home” . The arts community was
on the forefront of being able to, for one brief night, make the soldiers
forget the war, their problems and focus on some good music, skits, and dancing;
they could sing along, shout, laugh and have a great moment to remember before
they had to go back into the war zone!

I don’t hear much today about well known
actors and performers going to the war zone, but we, as friends, relatives and
neighbors of servicemen can remember to send our troops music, movies and other
types of entertainment that they can enjoy when they do get a “moment” to stop
and reflect. Let’s let them know that we appreciate the sacrifices they are
making to protect our country and send
them something that reminds them that the arts community cares about them! Visit the Cultural Alliance's website to learn about the many museums and events in the area that honor our military!

The Cultural Alliance of Greater Hampton Roads has developed the partnership with the SCORE (Service Corps of Retired Executives) to provide assistance and support for its member arts and cultural organizations and individual artists to help their arts organizations grow and/or to start a business.
Many smaller arts and cultural organizations lack expertise in some area of business and oftimes cannot afford to hire the experts needed to help "fix" the problems and to help to grow their arts organization. Many individual artists need assistance in marketing, in their finances, taxes, copyright issues, to name a few. SCORE provides individual counselling for arts and cultural organizations as well as individual artists. SCORE can assist an arts organization in the areas of:

Accounting

Business advice

Financing and loans

Legal issues

How to start up a business as well as how to run and grow a business

Marketing

Technology

Additionally, SCORE presents online webinars on business topics. Their June 20 webinar on "Collaborative Consumption" would be great for arts and cultural organizations and for artists groups who are looking to partner with another to offer and use services.
Members of the Cultural Alliance should visit the cultural alliance's website on www.culturalli.org for more information or the SCORE website to locate the Hampton Roads SCORE office near you, www.SCORE.Org.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7050066012481341091.post-73700964597425191522013-05-19T06:09:00.001-07:002013-05-27T10:00:38.397-07:00Arts and Cultural Organizations in Virginia can get assistance from Virginia Tourism Corporatation

Arts Organizations get help from Virginia Tourism Office

At the Cultural Alliance of Geater Hampton Roads Arts Commissioners' Roundtable program held in April Steve Galyean, the Director of Partnership Marketing Development of the Virginia Tourism Corporation, presented information about the Virginia Tourism Office and how it can assist local and statewide arts organizations in marketing their programs-- not only to state residents, but to the many tourists who visit Virginia. In addition to marketing assistance, the Corporation has grants that are available to state arts and cultural organizations that have a program that would enhance statewide tourism.

I have included information about these grants in this blog. Any arts organization that believes they can qualify should take advantage of these opportunities. See Contacts below for more information.

working for many years on behalf of both the LGBT community, and all residents
of Hampton Roads.” Mr. Whitehurst noted that Carlton,

Beginning in 1989 as CANDII (Children’s AIDS Network) and Full Circle AIDS
Hospice Support, the two groups worked to better the community and those who
were living with or were affected by AIDS. In 2006 these agencies merged
and ACCESS Aids Care was formed. For more than 20 years this community
group has provided awareness and support services to the Hampton Roads
community. In 2010-2011 ACCESS Aids Care served over 500 youth and
adults, served 12,000 meals to families and individuals, provided over 6,000
rides to medical appointments, and reached over 5,000 individuals through
educational outreach. The new LGBT
